I grew up in rural Indiana where I was immersed in agricultural field grid formations and surrounded by plant growth. My interest in magnetic force became clear as I began questioning how our memory divides experiences into fragments of a larger field of experience. The larger field remains unseen. I wanted a material and process to stand in for my philosophical interests. I began creating a visual language in this way. This work is ultimately addressing the unseen and the felt.
The Sun is a liquid molten magnet of iron that releases solar radiation in the form of photons. Photons produce both electric fields and magnetic fields. Once photons move through our atmosphere, there is a chemical reaction inside plant leaves that produce sugars through photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is vital for photosynthesis, allowing plants to absorb energy from light.
I am interested working with these fundamental forces that give life to our planet to create abstract drawings rooted in Archaic Classical symbolism. These drawings consist of grid variations and concentric circles. Carl Jung developed theories surrounding the existence of archetypes in the human unconscious. The squared circle represents the union of splits or oppositions in some alchemical traditions. Rome was built as a squared circle— Squaring the circle is symbolic of the integration of our personal unconscious into consciousness. Rome was built as a squared circle.
